Building New Roads To Reach Drivers
Article by Scott Weidner, June 24, 2008

For three days, these volunteer chaplains attended the TFC Candidate Training School - Spring of 2008 on the road towards becoming a TFC Chaplain missioinary. (Front, L to R) David Nispel (PA), Dan Burkholder (Canada), Jim Smalley (WV), Cindy and Bob Smith (IN); (Back, L to R) Mike Hayden (instructor), Margaret Burkholder (Canada), Howard Moses, Scott Weidner and Bunny O'Hare (instructors).

Transport For Christ is continually looking for opportunities to reach more drivers for Christ. Recently, God has enabled us to expand our reach through a variety of new avenues.

Driver Wellness Web Site TFC is in the process of creating a new Web site, www.driverwellness.com, as a first step toward meeting the felt needs of truckers and the industry through the Internet.

This site will address all aspects of trucker wellness--physical, emotional, family, social, and spiritual, including issues like job loss, problems at home, depression, etc. We're already covering topics such as stress, anger, marriage and conflict resolution through downloadable articles.

Soon we'll be offering content through downloadable podcasts and vodcasts (video broadcasts) along with the number for a new 24/7 Trucker Hotline providing counseling and other resources to the drivers who visit us.

Trucker Prayer Line The 24/7 TFC Trucker Prayer Line was activated at noon on May 1st--and some thirty seconds later, it rang! A driver called to thank TFC for being there for truckers. He just loved the fact that he could get to a chapel to attend church. He didn't want prayer--he wanted to pray for TFC! He was so blessed that he could give back to those who give to him!

Give this number to your trucker friends: 1-877-979-PRAY (7729).

Church Training Module Many churches have expressed strong interest in learning how to reach out to truckers. In response, TFC completed its first church training module with pastors from several churches in Buffalo, New York, in March. The response included feedback to help us improve the training process. In May, two more sessions were conducted with pastors and church leaders in Denver, Colorado, and in Lancaster County (at the International Office).

TFC will have two teams involved in the implementation of this module. One team will focus on training interested local churches around our existing chapel locations, while the other will focus on training churches in areas where TFC currently has no existing chapels. The most exciting aspect of this approach is that more truckers will be reached in a shorter time with lower development costs traditionally associated with placing a chapel. Locations currently under consideration are Dallas/Fort Worth and Laredo (Texas), Ann Arbor (Michigan) and Kansas City (Kansas). We are looking for interested churches in Florida, Louisiana, Utah, Arkansas, New Mexico and Arizona.

Daily Encouragement Blog Since January, TFC has offered a daily blog on the Web--and it's not just for truckers! Daily Encouragement is a Bible-based perspective offering hope, encouragement and exhortation to start or end your day. Log on to www.transportforchrist.org/links and click on the words Daily Encouragement. Messages are updated every weekday and are available freely through e-mail, RSS feeds and podcasts.

Rejoice with us at all the Lord is doing in and through this ministry. These developments are only possible because of you. Your obedience to God's call to pray and support TFC financially is enabling us to be even more effective and efficient in reaching out to drivers wherever they are. Thank you for your faithfulness!

If you would like to support TFC in these new efforts, please contact us at 717-426-9977 or send an e-mail to tfcio@transportforchrist.org. to learn how you can pray, give or participate in this ministry.
